Cricket has to restart but following so many guidelines won’t be easy: Azharuddin
Azharuddin said that health comes first and every person needs to be safe.
ormer India captain Mohammed Azharuddin said cricket needs to restart after the long break enforced due to coronavirus lockdown but only after taking all precautions.
Live action-starved cricket fans are eagerly looking forward to the 3-Test series between England and West Indies as it is set to mark the return of international cricket after the forced break due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has deferred it’s decision on T20 World Cup to next month while BCCI is keen on hosting the Indian Premier League in September to October if things go well.
“We need to have 3-4 venues because holding all matches at one stadium will be difficult,” Azharuddin said on Salaam Cricket 2020.
“And on the matter of the saliva ban, it will be very difficult. Even now if I get a ball I shine it first with my saliva before passing it on to someone else. Cricket has to restart but following so many guidelines won’t be easy. Till the time the ENG-WI matches don’t happen we won’t get to know what is right and what is wrong,” Azharuddin added.
Mohammed Azharuddin stressed that it won’t be easy for players to follow so many guidelines when cricket restarts. He also said that health comes first and every person needs to be safe.
“It all depends on the players, they are taking a big risk. Cricket is a contact sport because there is only one ball which travels from player-to-player and in the stands as well the fans touch it. Therefore, I think the boards need to sit and discuss about this as soon as possible. Cricket needs to restart but only after taking all precautions. Every person needs to be safe because health comes first.”
